MOXIBUSTION THERAPY
Sometimes, an acupuncture treatment using only the acupuncture needles to stimulate the meridian point of the body does not bring back enough yang energy into the system. We will then choose to use what is called moxibustion as an additional method of bringing in more yang energy into your body.
What's is Moxibustion? Breaking it down, moxibustion is the burning of moxa sticks on top of certain meridian points of your body. The main ingredient of moxa is mugwort. Mugwort is a natural plant found in various parts of the world. It’s an aromatic plant with several medicinal benefits to the human body. Naturally, mugwort has anti-herpetic effect, which suppresses symptoms of herpes simplex viruses when they flare up. Additionally, mugwort also acts has antithelmintic properties which can help in expelling parasitic worms from a host’s body. In some parts of the world, particularly Asian countries such as China, Korea and Japan, Mugwort is also sometimes consumed as a bittering agent when added to their food. It is a safe and natural plant with tons of beneficial properties. When used during pregnancy, there has been researches showing that moxibustion can increase the chances of cephalic positioning of fetuses that were in a breech position. How is Moxibustion applied at our clinic? In Traditional Chinese Medicine, mugwort is used to treat a variety of illnesses. Particularly those of yang deficit disorders. Moxibustion is usually done in two ways in our clinic, indirect moxibustion with acupuncture or indirect moxibustion with candles. Like our cupping therapy, we will never allow the flame to touch your body. When applying indirect moxibustion with acupuncture, we will proceed with our standard acupuncture practices. However, once the needles have been placed, we will also burn moxa at the end of the acupuncture needle to redirect some of the energy from the moxa into your body. In our other practice, we burn moxa candles directly on top of your meridian points without touching your skin. This is done in a controlled environment so you will never have to be concerned with any unwanted burns. Speak to one of our registered and licensed TCM doctor today to see if moxibustion is the right treatment for you! |
